In 2019, I photograph a day of Ramadan in Paris 18th. I still remember in 2008, a few weeks after arriving in France I went for a tour around the district of Barbès. I was impressed by the atmosphere there. Far from my family and my friends the nostalgia of the country that had seen me grow up took me by the throat. The scents and smells of North African food, ras el hanout and ma’a zhar (orange flower water) were present, awakening these memories not so far from my childhood … A few years later it is not far from this neighborhood that I was going to settle … “The Goutte d’Or”.

I have always wanted to document the month of Ramadan in this neighborhood. But I wanted to show that the beautiful things, the sense of sharing and the festive moods that brighten the evenings. This year I was able to follow the members of the association “La table ouverte”.

“La Table ouverte”

I followed Rachid from the association “La table ouverte” because it is an association that is on the working on the field and very active. Every Ramadan volunteers of the association cook thousands of dishes they distribute before breaking the fast. At the level of the Polonceau street where I discovered a few months ago during the festival of “La Goutte d’Or” with the project “Antre” of Séverine Bourguignon.

I could not finish this project because of lack of time. Maybe next year !? but meanwhile every day of this month I saw the ICI kitchens turn to offer these thousands of meals distributed every night to allow them to have a little taste of Ramadan at home with a lot of Chorba and Lben.

I’ve been making some street photography at the Goutte d’Or during the summer festival. This neighborhood which was and still a working class area is unique. I’m living here since three years, I’ve always wanted to make street photography here but I prefered to take my time. Waiting to understand a bit and to get used to it. Some are saying you have to shoot photography with a new eye before you’re getting used to it. But I prefer sometimes to wait, to not make photograph like a tourist !

It was the chance for me to walk in the streets with my camera and meet people talk to them take portraits of them. Maybe its the first step to a little reportage about the area of the Goutte d’Or it’s more interesting for me tho make from the inside. With knowing more the stories of the people i’m taking pictures of. Especially when it’s a neighborhood that sometimes people are scared of because they heard bad stories… I have to admit stories are not all pink but I insist that in matter of security I feel more safe here than elswhere in Paris. People know each other here it’s a little village. Gentrifcation has already started since few years but I hope it won’t get futher it’s a good balance until now and it should stay like that otherwise it will loose it’s unique seal !

ANTRE by Séverine Bourguignon

Antre by Séverine Bourguignon is a participative project, Séverine is a visual artist. She made these portable structures from recycled materials such as rice bags, onion fillets, fabric scraps of Wax all of this by involving the inhabitants of the Goutte d’Or neighborhood. These artworks are not still, they move ! They walk in the neighborhood, the structures are worn by the inhabitants and they do a kind of pilgrimage in the mythical streets of the Goutte d’Or.

I was there as part of the neighborhood party “La Goutte d’Or en Fête”. I was witnessing this extraordinary stroll. Observing the inhabitants and the passers-by being questioned, questioning… talking, exchanging.

The participants wander from the square Polonceau and they follow a specific itinerary made by Séverine stopping at the level of all those shops or organisation that offered their help for the realization of this project.

La fête de la Goutte d’Or

Antre was present at the Neighborhood party ” La Goutte d’Or en fête” which is a celebration that akes place every year towards the end of June beginning of July. A neighborhood party like no other for a unique neighborhood. A party around urban cultures rich in animation. Outdoor cinema, graffiti workshop, throwing and flying flip flops, educational farm, music concerts with renowned artists and some of the rising scene. A party with a unique atmosphere as there is not much left on Paris.

Since I’ve missed it two years in a row, I decided to make them forgive me. So for this edition I volunteered ! So if you want to live the festival from the inside you should volunteer here !

Yes ! France world’s champion, France 2018 Paris 18th ! Few have bet on it but the French national football team have done it well ! They were unbeatable, never led on the score until the final whistle of this edition of the FIFA world cup 2018, in Russia. For my part I was in the 18th district in Paris again in “La chope du Château rouge”. Very few places were available. Even I was there two hours before the start of the game. Blue, white and red flags hung from everywhere, horns in the streets came to assist the praises of supporters of Giroud, Pavard and their teammates. Just the time to find a seat order a beer and a improvised countdown started to announce the kick off.

The 90 minutes of the regular time passed, thousands of liters of beer poured from the shooters, cold sweats also especially during the beginning of the first half of the game. Then songs that accompanied the French team started louder and louder to the end of the game, Champions of the world ! They made it, the referee blew his whistle announcing the world of football that the French are the best. Didier Deschamps offered to his nation and a to whole generation a second star for life ! **

I immortalized a few moments in the semifinal, I came back to the same place because even if all converged on the Champs Elysee, I wanted to stay at the foot of the hill of Montmartre celebrate the victory with my villagers of the 18th !

20 years ago, I had seen and lived in front of a TV on the other side of the Mediterranean. Today I am lucky to be there in France in this country champion of the world and live a historic moment. At the final whistle, people rushed out with shouts of joy that rocked the country! Having planned the blow, or rather having been made to have I did not come in costume or empty hands this time. I planned the camera and the sneakers! I took pictures until my camera broke!

I photographed the happiness, the celebration, the victory and the pride expressed by a whole neighborhood, a whole people. We all felt French! I do not have more words … instead of photos!

We’re in the final ! – World Cup 2018

We’re in the final ! Tonight, as everywhere in France, almost everyone has rushed out to celebrate the victory of France over Belgium. Flags, pennants, horns, smoke scenes that France has not seen since 1998. A celebration in joy and good mood. For my part I was shouting “We’re in the final” in the 18th distrcit of Paris after being held in suspense for more than 90 minutes! I went out with my friends to celebrate with dignity this magic moment of pure happiness. Until I realized I was in a suit and did not have my camera.

Well yes seats are expensive in the Parisian bars in semi-final time where the France team plays its destiny. It must be at least an hour before if we hope to have a comfortable place, especially a place where we can see the game. So after the job go to the bar and keep places for friends. We were at “La chope du Château rouge” quickly I went to change, get my case to immortalize this moment! rare scenes of people marching sharing their joys with others in a good-natured atmosphere. Beer in hand, tricolor flag in the other and then the sentence that still resonates in me: We’re in the final!

A RATP bus was immobilized after being stormed by supporters and everyone who joined the party, all smiled, felt French more than ever, even those who were not not. I must admit that I had a little penchant for Belgium … but what do you want it is like that, France my country of adoption is in Final. Good news that feast and comes to put a good mood after several months complicated by tragic events on the security and social … Joy and good mood have taken over tonight, almost as there is 20 years, at that time I lived in Algeria from the top of my 15 years I envied this holiday I would have liked to be there … Sunday can be?

As part of the Rhizomes festival 2018 festival Raina Rai ignited the Rachmaninov Garden in the 18th district. Originally planned in the another garden the concert had to be moved and the sound balance was made in a really short record ! The opportunity for us to have a preview of a few notes played by Lotfi Attar. This brought me back memories where the songs Raina Rai have resonated throughout my youth. Like when I was on drums with a band playing Taila or surely “Ya Zina Diri Latay” ! This song that I’ve listened recently in the last feature film of Kechiche “Mektoub my love” announces an imminent return of this legendary group.

Blaise and his co-organizers have put together a very nice program for the Rhizomes festival, which began last weekend at the end of the “La Goutte d’Or en Fête” celebrating with Sofiane Saidi & Mazalda.

Raina Rai made the XVIII th vibrate, the steps of dance and the hips rocked the square Rachmaninov in a good-natured atmosphere, young and old mingled, dancing together, singing together the tubes, applauding, saluting the performance of the group , going as far as to invade barefoot the small stream of the square to get closer to the Seine and honor the presence of this living legend of the Franco-Algerian rai 80s.

The Rhizomes festival

The Rhizomes Festival, with its series of free concerts at the foot of Montmartre Hill and other gardens and eighteenth district square is an event that is not very publicized perhaps, but it’s been there for 17 years! See you next year for an 18th in the 18th!
