Arthemon Lis – German actor

Arthemon is a German actor that I met in Hamburg. He contacted me through ModelMayhem and we set up a photo session around Speicherstadt, just a couple hours before I left the city. We had a really nice evening together and we made good pictures. We were in the same mood, having fun, easy going, and since we didn’t had time to know each other we exchanged on some topics while doing the photos. I asked him to write some words about him.

“My name is Arthemon. I’m not a morning person. Like many of you, I follow society’s general trend of pilgrimaging to the beaurocratic place of worship every morning and satisfying the workload that our superior ladles on our desk. Like many of you, this does not give my life any meaning. Nearing the end of my Civil Engineering degree, at one of the leading universities in Germany, I keenly anticipate the day that I will cast this knowledge aside and direct my first film. My passion lies in Cinema. It’s a shame that it took this long to figure out, but hey, that’s just how life is. Sometimes life hands you lemons, but you don’t see the lemonade until someone steps on them.

Having lived in 5 different countries in the last 5 years, I can still honestly say that my life’s a complicated work in progress. Change is a daily part of life and adaptability is key in succeeding at it. That’s exactly what has inspired me to test the waters of acting / modeling. You’re constantly on your feet analyzing situations and improvising your actions and words to suit. Though not the greatest of talents, it gives me an opportunity to immerse into the field of cinema / photography and see firsthand how things work backstage: how to properly lead a casting, how to communicate a screenplay efficiently and effectively, and to understand who has the last say at the end of the day. This insight and knowledge is my aim in the game. Back in the day, one of my teachers introduced us to the concept of a “Renaissance Man”, one who’s gifted in a number of different disciplines. I guess my whole life’s been about just that: to aspire to become the next Da Vinci. To wake up the next morning, grab life by the pussy, and walk home feeling like you’ve given it your absolute best go.”

The port of Hamburg

Port of Hamburg – Port de Hambourg

In the port of Hamburg, around 9,000 ship calls per year, almost 300 berths and a total of 43 kilometers of quay for seagoing vessels, more than 1,900 freight trains per week, four state-of-the-art container terminals, three cruise terminals and around 50 facilities specialized in handling roro and breakbulk and all kinds of bulk cargoes, along with about 7,300 logistics companies within the city limits – these are just a few of the factors making the Port of Hamburg to one of the world’s most flexible, high-performance universal ports. 137.8 million tons of cargo crossed the quay walls of Germany’s largest seaport in 2015. That included around 8.8 million standard containers (TEU). History

The port is almost as old as the history of Hamburg itself. Founded on 7 May 1189 by Frederick I for its strategic location, it has been Central Europe‘s main port for centuries and enabled Hamburg to develop early into a leading city of trade with a rich and proud bourgeoisie.

During the age of the Hanseatic League from the 13th to 16th century, Hamburg was considered second only to the port and city of Lübeck in terms of its position as a central trading node for sea-borne trade. With discovery of the Americas and the emerging transatlantic trade, Hamburg exceeded all other German ports. During the second half of the 19th century, Hamburg became Central Europe’s main hub for transatlantic passenger and freight travel, and from 1871 onward it was Germany’s principal port of trade. In her time the Hamburg America Line was the largest shipping company in the world. Since 1888, the HADAG runs a scheduled ferry service across various parts of the port and the Elbe. The Free Port, established on 15 October 1888, enabled traders to ship and store goods without going through customs and further enhanced Hamburg’s position in sea trade with neighbouring countries. The Moldauhafen has a similar arrangement, though related to the Czech Republic exclusively.

The Speicherstadt, one of Hamburg’s architectural icons today, is a large wharf area of 350,000 m² floor area on the northern shore of the river, built in the 1880s as part of the free port and to cope with the growing quantity of goods stored in the port.

Hamburg shipyards lost fleets twice after WWI and WWII, and during the partition of Germany between 1945 and 1990, the Port of Hamburg lost much of its hinterland and consequently many of its trading connections. However, since German reunification, the fall of the Iron Curtain and European enlargement, Hamburg has made substantial ground as one of Europe’s prime logistics centres and as one of the world’s largest and busiest sea ports. The Speicherstadt means ‘City of Warehouses’, it’s located in Hamburg, Germany. The Speicherstadt is the largest warehouse district in the world where the buildings stand on timber-pile foundations, oak logs, in this particular case. It is located in the port of Hamburg—within the HafenCity quarter—and was built from 1883 to 1927.

A few days berfore arriving to Hamburg, I checked on which location I should visit since I was supposed to stay just a couple of days there. Speicherstadt was the one showing up out on each research I made. As you maybe read it on my post on Hamburg, I had more than a week-end there. One morning I took my camera and my feet ,they are a good team, especially when you make some urban photography exploration. I headed to the Altone fish market, walked along the harbor until the Elbe philharmonic and finally arrived few hours later to the Speicherstadt. It was not a sunny day, but between some showers, I had a good light for some pictures. The Speicherstadt is full of surprises, I passed by there many times during my stay and i chose that location for doing a photo session with Melanie & Clara (See Musical performers) and with Arthemon (still working on editing the pictures) a German actor that contacted me on Modelmayhem.

The district was built as a free zone to transfer goods without paying customs. As of 2009 the district and the surrounding area are under redevelopment. As the first site in Hamburg, it has been awarded the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site on 5 July 2015.
