A portrait in Hamburg

I took many pictures and many portrait in Hamburg. During the week I’ve spent there I met many people and really interesting ones. I stayed in room of a big shared flat of a friend, 13 people were sharing the flat. Ya 13 ! Located in Altona, it was an old factory of machines producing machines for leather industry. Accommodated as flat since many decades, it was really pleasant to be there. They were really kind and welcomed me really good. I had a talk with one of them and he surprised me telling me, that he have been in Algeria four time at the end of the 80’s doing a road trip, I told him that he must know my country better than me ! He showed me in a big atlas map all the way he did and how he made it through north Africa to west Africa, and my reaction was just “Wow” I should do that too, then I told him that it’s funny that he went to Africa for a road trip and that me I’m doing one in Europe.

I took two portrait of him one color and the other black & white, it was a really interesting person. We also exchanged about politics and about the gentrification in big cities. He started living there 32 years ago, the reaction of people was ” how are you living there !?! are you not scared ? and nowadays they are asking him if he can afford it !

Speicherstadt – Hamburg



The Speicherstadt means ‘City of Warehouses’, it’s located in Hamburg, Germany. The Speicherstadt is the largest warehouse district in the world where the buildings stand on timber-pile foundations, oak logs, in this particular case. It is located in the port of Hamburg—within the HafenCity quarter—and was built from 1883 to 1927.

A few days berfore arriving to Hamburg, I checked on which location I should visit since I was supposed to stay just a couple of days there. Speicherstadt was the one showing up out on each research I made. As you maybe read it on my post on Hamburg, I had more than a week-end there. One morning I took my camera and my feet ,they are a good team, especially when you make some urban photography exploration. I headed to the Altone fish market, walked along the harbor until the Elbe philharmonic and finally arrived few hours later to the Speicherstadt. It was not a sunny day, but between some showers, I had a good light for some pictures. The Speicherstadt is full of surprises, I passed by there many times during my stay and i chose that location for doing a photo session with Melanie & Clara (See Musical performers) and with Arthemon (still working on editing the pictures) a German actor that contacted me on Modelmayhem.

The district was built as a free zone to transfer goods without paying customs. As of 2009 the district and the surrounding area are under redevelopment. As the first site in Hamburg, it has been awarded the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site on 5 July 2015.
