Hebammen Projekt: A Journey with Midwives

It’s here at last—my very first photography project! Born from a journey that left a deep imprint on me, Hebammen Projekt is a tribute to the extraordinary midwives I met during my travels through Germany from October 2016 to January 2017.

This message is dedicated to midwives everywhere. You are the custodians of life’s most miraculous moments, the first hands to cradle new beginnings. To all of you who bring babies into the world, this project is my way of celebrating life alongside you—not just today, but every day.

During those three months, I had the privilege of witnessing a world I had only glimpsed before. A world filled with stories—of struggle and triumph, love and resilience. Each midwife I met shared something unique, something profoundly human, that shaped this project. There is so much to tell that I decided to release it in parts.

After the introduction I published in January, I’m thrilled to share Part One, which begins in Regensburg, Bavaria. It’s here that I met my first group of midwives, and through them, I began to understand the complexities of their work. I learned a startling fact: only one in four German midwives attends births. Why?

I’m not a midwife, not a doctor, not a statistician, nor a journalist. I’m just a storyteller—a concerned citizen with a camera and an open heart. What I saw, what I heard, and what I captured is filtered through my own lens, both literally and figuratively.

So, here begins the story of Hebammen Projekt. A story about life, about those who nurture it, and about the challenges they face in doing so. Let’s start in Regensburg, where these midwives first invited me into their world.
