I made a session of pregnancy photography in Bavaria during my first trip to the south east of Germany. I had the chance to set a photo session with a pregnant women in a wine yard. That was really great because we didn’t plan for anything special. After a day of relaxing time and discovering the area. We went to the top of the hill over the small Bavarian village The landscape was great. A huge wine yard with a view on mountains, felt like in an old German movie. We started to take classic pregnancy portraits,the couple was walking and I was taking pictures of them, trying to keep the scene really natural and not posed. At one moment we found ourselves in a really quit area where no one could disturb, so they made a quick talk and a the decision was took. They wanted to make some nude pregnancy photography. I was surprised because I was not really prepared for this. But after few minutes, I’ve found myself feeling more comfortable to take pictures and to give some directions for the pregnant woman. It was a great evening for photography because the mood was perfect and also the couple, they made me feel really comfortable.

Olympiapark Munich – Parc olympique de Munich

Built to host the 1972 Summer Olympics games, the Olympic Park of Munich was built in only six years on a 300-acre vacant land north of Munich. This flat terrain is the Oberwiesenfeld, formerly used for military exercises, airport in the inter-war period and after 1945 to pour out the ruins of the bombed city, creating a real artificial hill of 60 meters High (See Photo – Olympiaberg). The concept of a “green Olympic Games” was chosen, and so too was the orientation toward the ideals of democracy. Officials sought to integrate optimism toward the future with a positive attitude toward technology, and in so doing set aside memories of the past, such as the Olympic Games of 1936 in Berlin. The architectural firm of Günther Behnisch and its partners developed a comprehensive masterplan for the sports and recreation area, which was under construction from 1968 until 1972. The landscape layout was designed by landscape architect Günther Grzimek. The eye-catching tensile structure that covers much of the park was designed by German architect and engineer Frei Otto with Günther Behnisch. In all, the project spent 1.35 billion German Marks to complete the Olympic Park of Munich

The artificial hill that of the Olympic park of Munich once was just a slope was rethink and renamed Olympiaberg. A 291 meter high tower was erected hosting a restaurant overlooking Munich and far on the Bavarian Alps. Swimming pool, stadium, gym and other equipment was delivered on time and in high quality.

Surf in Munich

An amazing surf spot in the city center

Yes surfing in Munich! It was on this cold December day, I did not expect at all to come across a surf spot right in the city center of Munich. I was walking by the English garden, saw some people gathering to one place, then I discovered this place. Located on the Eisbach (Ice River), the one meter artificial wave was created in 1972 by surf adept on this tributary of the river Isar. It is technically forbidden to swim there but the authorities of the city tolerate it for the high skilled surfer and since 2012 it is legal to surf there.

Eisbachwelle

The Eisbachwelle, or the ice break wave and its surfer offers an incredible scene, moreover all passing people stops and lose the notion of time, as I spent more than half an hour to watch these Surfers defying the cold and standing up to this wave that undulates to infinity. The scene is worth a visit, if you pass by the Haus der kunst or the Englischer Garten stop there, you will be surprised by the frame as well as the noise of this powerful wave deferring in the middle Of the Bavarian capital.

False informations about the Munich wave

This wave is artificial and unnatural as some tour guides or travel agency such as easy travel says that it’s a natural one. Also it is deplorable to see some information on the net as of course on RTL (French news website) where they advertise for O’Neill and says that it is the brand who made it possible to surf in Munich (900 km away from the first surf spot worthy of the name.) So, no gentlemen !  They surf since 1972 and it is not the brand Which allowed this, but good a little ad on RTL to disinform it always helps. Anyway, apparently the story was bought…

European Surf Championship on artificial wave

In August 2012, Munich hosted the second European Surf Championship on an artificial outdoor wave, built next to the city’s airport. It was part of a three-week Surf and Style event that was sponsored by Lufthansa and had the full support of local authorities – away from the early days of surfing on the river. The sport began in the 1970s, with a small group attaching towing cables to the bridge that crosses the Eisbach near the southern edge of the Englischer Garten Park. They held the ropes, tried to stand on door-shaped planks, and tried to imitate the ocean surfers they had seen abroad.

Münich ! I’m hearing about the city since ages, finally I got there to visit ! After stopping by Regensburg and Ingolstadt for the midwfery project (which is going really well) The city was my next destination in Bavaria. I took the train and arrived late to my host from Couchsrufing (which was really nice to me). Then after breakfast I left for Marienplatz to discover a bit.

Let’s talk about the Bavarian capital a bit ! It has the lowest unemployement rate in Germany 4,6% (source:www.muenchen.de), which makes the city really attractive, but also makes it really hard to find a flat there. Munich, Münich or München  is a major centre of art, advanced technologies, finance, publishing, culture, innovation, education, business, and tourism (I think I’ve listed everything !)  in Germany and Europe. It has a very high quality of living.

I’m not going to talk about the “Oktoberfest” since everyone knows about it and that I was there on December which is a bit late for it ! I liked having a Gluwein in Marienplatz and seeing the Christmas market I have to be honest and to say that I was expecting a bit more, but that was really fine.

Haus der kunst | Die goldene bar

I’ve been advised to go to the golden bar to see the goldy/fancy decoration inside. I can tell you that you won’t regret it. The waiters are nice and the location just behind the haus der kunst makes it a good stop after admiring an exhibition there.

Around the Deutsches museum

After a Glüwein in Marienplatz, I went to the Deutches museum. But I was running out of time and a bit tired to make the whole visit, the fault of the hot wine maybe 🙂 Shame on me ! an engineer coming until the museum of the German technology and not entering in it !

The Olympic park of Münich | “Olympiapark München”

I had a drink with my host Kurt in the Olympic village of Münich, feels like the olympic games were running just two years ago, the architecture and the atmosphere is “unique” I decided to go there for more pictures during daylight ! which is ended with one afternoon at the Olympic village and one morning at the Olympic stadium. Regensburg is a city in south-east of Germany, situated at the confluence of the Danube, Naab and Regen rivers. With over 140,000 inhabitants, Regensburg is the fourth-largest city in the State of Bavaria after Munich, Nuremberg and Augsburg. The city is the political, economic and cultural center of Eastern Bavaria and the capital of the Bavarian administrative region Upper Palatinate.

I’ve stayed one week in Regensburg for the Midwifery project, I’ve met really interesting people for my project and outside of it too. People were really generous, helpful and open minded. It was my first time in Bavaria and I had the feeling to be outside of Germany at the beginning (not in a bad way at all). Bavaria, is completely different from other lands of Germany, there’s many common point, but still many differences and that’s why I really like Germany.

During my stay Regensburg left me a really good memory, not only inside my head. A scar over my head ! I had a little accident with the roof of the flat where I was hosted. One day I was a bit late for an appointment. I walked out of the flat, it was in an old building of the 15th century, where the roofs are really low, especially for me. My head met the roof, I got a really hard hit. a couple of seconds later, I was laying on the ground, watching my camera, my coffee, my bag and MYSELF on the floor ! I started to understand that I was knocked out, I’ve failed to get up twice, but the third was the good one, my face was full of blood. Panicked by the scene, I tried to call the 112, but my calls were unsuccessful, old building, means no network ! I went to back inside the flat to clean and to see how bad it was. A lot of blood, but nothing bad, just a good story to tell and a good memory of Regensburg.

Regensburg is one of the oldest city of Germany with a rich history as you can see it while wandering in the streets. I had a really good time there and as I promised to my hosts, I’ll be back in summer to see how the little Italy looks, see you soon Regensburg !

This fall I’m travelling throurgh Germany to discover the country and the culture and to make my project around midwifery. I was in Würzburg last week-end. It’s a beautiful city of Bavaria, located on the Main river, it is the capital of the Regierungsbezirk. They are having a local dialect called Franconian (Fränkisch). Würzburg is at the same distance of of Frankfurt am Main and of Nuremberg.

Würzburg has several internationally recognized institutions in science and research. Founded in 1402 the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg or  University of Würzburg is one of the oldest university of Germany. Nowadays, there is more than 22.000 students. Many of them enrolled in many academic disciplines as astronomy, biology, Catholic theology, chemistry, computer science, culture, economics, education and social sciences, geography, history, languages and linguistics, law, literature, mathematics, medicine (human medicine, dentistry and biomedicine),pharmacy, philosophy, physics, political science, psychology and sociology. University of Applied Science or  University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt.

Must Sees

If you are like me just there for a short time this is the list of the must sees. To be honest, I just had a few hours there, so I was not able to do them all (as you can see it in my pictures). But here’s a short list of what you must see.

Festung Marienberg (Fortress Marienberg)

The Fortress Marienberg is the most dominating feature of the city; it towers above it all. Take a tour and learn about its history.

Alte Mainbrücke (old bridge)

From the old bridge “Alte Mainbrücke”, enjoy fantastic views of the Fortress Marienberg, the pilgrimage church “Käppele” and the famous vineyards.

Dom St. Kilian (cathedral)

“St. Kilian” is a prime example of the architectural style during the time of the Salian kings. It is the fourth largest Romanesque cathedral in Germany and is home to exquisite artifacts from many centuries.

Pilgrimage Church “Käppele”

Enjoy splendid architecture and a glamorous interior decoration at the Baroque pilgrimage church “Käppele”, built between 1748 and 1750 by Balthasar Neumann.

Churches “Marienkapelle” and “Neumünster”

Make sure to visit “Marienkapelle” and “Neumünster”. “Marienkapelle” is featuring some world renowned sandstone sculptures by Tilman Riemenschneider. “Neumünster” is a Romanesque cathedral dating back to the 11th century.
